Niagara Falls Jet Boat Tours

How the Niagara Falls jet boat tour works: the Queenston and Lewiston departures, the open Wet Jet or domed Dry Freedom Jet, prices, height rules and what you see.

Updated September 2026

A Niagara Falls jet boat tour is one of the most exciting ways to experience the Niagara River, but it does not go underneath Niagara Falls.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours operates downstream in the Niagara Gorge, navigating the Class V Devil’s Hole Rapids and reaching the Niagara Whirlpool area. The approximately 45-minute adventure combines speed, white water, gorge scenery and 360-degree turns.

Tours depart from:

  • Queenston, Ontario
  • Lewiston, New York

You can choose the open Wet Jet or the enclosed Dry Freedom Jet.

What Is the Niagara Jet Boat?

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours uses high-powered boats on the lower Niagara River.

The route includes:

  • Niagara Gorge
  • Devil’s Hole Rapids
  • Niagara Whirlpool
  • High-speed sections
  • 360-degree Hamilton turns
  • Historic and geological commentary

This is an adventure ride, not a traditional sightseeing cruise. If you want to know how the day runs from car park to dock, our guide to what to expect on a Niagara jet boat tour follows it step by step.

Does It Go Under Niagara Falls?

No.

The boat does not reach Horseshoe Falls, American Falls or Bridal Veil Falls. The operator’s own FAQ puts the closest approach at the Whirlpool, roughly a mile short of the Falls, and the section between the Whirlpool and Niagara Falls contains Class VI rapids that the commercial jet boat does not navigate.

For the Falls themselves, choose Niagara City Cruises or Maid of the Mist. Our comparison of the best Niagara Falls boat tours sets those two against the jet boat.

Wet Jet

The Wet Jet is completely open.

Expect to become completely soaked. The operator says that in the Devil’s Hole Rapids you can end up sitting knee-deep in water, and that every seat on the Wet Jet is a wet seat.

Choose it if:

  • You want maximum adrenaline
  • You are visiting in warm weather
  • You have dry clothes afterwards
  • Getting wet is part of the fun

Dry Freedom Jet

The Dry Freedom Jet is enclosed beneath a glass dome.

You still experience:

  • Speed
  • Rapids
  • Whirlpool
  • Gorge scenery
  • 360-degree turns

but stay dry.

Choose it for:

  • Cooler weather
  • Families
  • Photography
  • Comfort
  • Busy itineraries

Our choice:

Wet Jet in warm summer weather.

Dry Freedom Jet in cooler weather or if you have plans afterwards.

The full trade-offs, including the two ways groups reliably get this decision wrong, are in Wet Jet vs Dry Freedom Jet.

Wet Freedom Jet

The operator also offers exposed premium Power Row seating on the Freedom Jet: the two outside rows at the very front of the boat, which get the most water.

Riders must be at least 13 years old and 100 lb, and the operator sells only adult tickets for these seats. The rules can change, so check the live booking page before selecting this option.

Prices

The operator’s own standard adult prices for the Wet Jet and Dry Freedom Jet are:

Canada

C$78.95 adult, C$44.95 child (12 and younger)

USA

US$68.95 adult, US$39.95 child (12 and younger)

Premium Wet Freedom Jet seating costs more: C$88.95 in Canada and US$78.95 in the USA, adults only.

Taxes and fees are added on top. The operator says reservations are recommended, and that walk-ons are welcome subject to availability.

The GetYourGuide prices are quoted in US dollars and start from a different figure: the Queenston tour above starts at $69 and the Lewiston tour at $73. Compare the total at checkout before you decide where to book.

Canada Departure

55 River Frontage Road
Queenston, Ontario

Approximately 15–20 minutes by road from central Niagara Falls depending on traffic.

Free on-site parking is generally available subject to space. Our Niagara Falls parking guide shows how it fits with the other lots along the Parkway.

USA Departure

115 S Water Street
Lewiston, New York

Also around 15–20 minutes from central Niagara Falls, New York depending on traffic.

The operator lists free on-site parking at this dock as well, subject to availability.

Queenston or Lewiston?

Choose the side where you are already visiting.

There is little reason to create an international border crossing just to take the same core jet-boat experience from the opposite side. Which Niagara jet boat tour is right for you compares the two docks side by side.

Age and Height Requirements

Current minimum heights are approximately:

Dry Freedom Jet

40 in / 102 cm

Wet Jet

44 in / 112 cm

Premium exposed seating has stricter requirements.

Children are measured at check-in.

Anyone under 13 or under 100 lb is not seated in the first three or four rows, and under-18s must ride with an adult. Our guide to what to wear and who can ride has the full rules.

Who Should Not Ride?

The operator warns against participation for people with certain:

  • Back problems
  • Neck injuries
  • Heart conditions
  • Osteoporosis

Pregnant passengers are not permitted.

Always review the current medical guidance before booking.

How Fast Is the Jet Boat?

Fast enough that the ride is more about the water than the speed on the dial. The operator does not publish a top speed, so we do not quote one.

What makes the ride feel intense is the combination of speed, large waves, narrow gorge walls and rapid changes of direction. The river itself is fast here: Niagara Parks measures the water through Devil’s Hole at about 36 km/h.

What Is a Hamilton Turn?

A Hamilton Turn is a high-speed 360-degree jet-boat spin.

It is one of the signature manoeuvres of the tour.

Do You See Niagara Falls?

No.

You see the lower Niagara River and gorge.

If you want the Falls, take the classic Falls boat separately.

Do You See Niagara Whirlpool?

Yes.

The Whirlpool area is one of the major landmarks of the route.

Niagara Jet Boat vs Niagara City Cruises

Niagara City Cruises:

  • Falls
  • Mist
  • First-time sightseeing

Whirlpool Jet Boat:

  • Rapids
  • Speed
  • Gorge
  • Adventure

The ideal combination is to do both.

Our picks. The bare daytime Niagara City Cruises ticket is not sold on GetYourGuide. The cheapest guided way onto the boat is the walking tour with the Hornblower boat, from $72 (4.8★ from 271 reviews). For the version with by far the most reviews, the four-hour premium tour with Journey Behind the Falls and the Skylon Tower starts at $130 (4.8★ from 4,356 reviews). On the US side, the small-group Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds tour is from $115 (4.9★ from 658 reviews). Our Niagara City Cruises guide covers prices, queues and what to expect on board.

Niagara Jet Boat vs White Water Walk

White Water Walk lets you watch the rapids.

The jet boat lets you experience the navigable rapids from the river.

Take White Water Walk first if you want context and photography. The White Water Walk entry ticket is from $17 (4.6★ from 161 reviews), and our White Water Walk guide explains why the boardwalk and the boat are looking at different water.

Is It Scary?

It is designed as a thrill ride.

Expect:

  • Fast movement
  • Large waves
  • Sudden turns
  • Rough water

If you enjoy speed boats and roller-coaster-style experiences, you will probably find it exciting rather than frightening.

What to Wear on Wet Jet

Wear:

  • Quick-drying clothes
  • Secure water-friendly shoes
  • Clothes you do not mind soaking

Bring:

  • Dry clothes
  • Socks
  • Towel
  • Bag for wet items

Avoid unprotected electronics. The operator provides free lockers at each dock and says that on the Wet Jet you can take only hats, glasses and fully waterproof cameras on a wrist strap aboard. Shoes are mandatory: you cannot ride barefoot.

Best Time to Go

June through September is easiest to recommend.

The Wet Jet is especially enjoyable on warm afternoons.

June and September can offer a strong balance of weather and crowds. The boats do not run through the winter, and the exact opening and closing dates move each year, so check the live calendar for your dates. The best time for a Niagara jet boat tour covers the season and the time of day, and the best time to visit Niagara Falls for boat tours shows what runs in each month.

Should You Book in Advance?

Yes.

Jet boats have specific departures and limited capacity.

Advance reservations are particularly important in:

  • July
  • August
  • Weekends
  • Holidays

Is It Worth It?

Yes if you are booking it for the right reason.

Do not book it expecting a faster Maid of the Mist.

Book it because you want:

  • Niagara Gorge
  • White water
  • Speed
  • Niagara Whirlpool
  • Adventure

If you are still deciding how it fits with everything else on the Canadian side, things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada puts the jet boat in order with the other attractions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the jet boat?

About 45 minutes on the water. Allow longer overall, because check-in and the safety orientation come before the boat leaves the dock.

How wet do you get?

Completely soaked on the Wet Jet; dry on the Dry Freedom Jet.

Where does it depart in Canada?

Queenston, Ontario, at 55 River Frontage Road.

Where does it depart in the USA?

Lewiston, New York, at 115 S Water Street.

Yes. Departures have limited capacity, and July, August, weekends and holidays fill first.

Which is better, Wet or Dry?

Wet for maximum adventure; Dry for comfort and photography.

Final Verdict

Choose the Wet Jet for the most intense version.

Choose the Dry Freedom Jet for almost all the excitement without wet clothing.
