Niagara Falls in Winter

Which Niagara boats and gorge attractions close for winter, what stays open, and how to plan a December to March visit around the ice, the lights and Journey Behind the Falls.

Updated October 2026

Niagara Falls is well worth visiting in winter, but it is not the season for a trip built around the boats. The Falls stay spectacular through December, January, February and March, and snow, ice and frozen mist change the whole look of the gorge. Several of the famous water and gorge attractions are seasonal, though: the Maid of the Mist closed on 8 November in 2026, Niagara City Cruises, the Whirlpool jet boats and the White Water Walk all stop for the winter, while Journey Behind the Falls stays open all year.

Do Boat Tours Run in Winter?

Do not build a December to March trip on the assumption that the classic boats will be running.

Niagara Falls itself can be visited all year.

The boat operators set their own seasons, and open only once the weather and the river allow it. In 2026 ice on the river delayed Niagara City Cruises’ opening until 1 May.

Is the Maid of the Mist Open in Winter?

No.

The Maid of the Mist ran from 24 April to 8 November in 2026.

Niagara Falls State Park stays open, and is still worth a walk, after the boat has closed for the year.

Is Niagara City Cruises Open in Winter?

Niagara City Cruises is seasonal. It runs into December, weather permitting, and then stops until spring.

Check the live calendar if your dates fall near the start or the end of the season.

For deep winter, plan around the attractions that stay open all year instead. Our Niagara Falls boat tickets and schedules guide has the season dates and prices for every boat.

Does the Whirlpool Jet Boat Run in Winter?

No. The jet boats run from spring through mid-autumn, and the daily schedule depends on the weather, the time of year and demand.

If the jet boat is a must-do, come in the warmer months, not hoping for a winter departure. Our Niagara Falls jet boat tours guide covers the route and the two docks.

Is the White Water Walk Open in Winter?

The White Water Walk is a spring-to-autumn attraction: Niagara Parks runs it from April to November.

Do not expect it to be open in winter. Our White Water Walk guide covers the boardwalk and its season.

1. Journey Behind the Falls

This is the best winter alternative to a classic Falls boat.

You go down beside Horseshoe Falls and walk through tunnels to observation areas close to the falling water.

It is open all year. Niagara Parks charges C$33 for adults and C$21.50 for children aged 3 to 12.

There is no standalone Journey Behind the Falls ticket on GetYourGuide. The premium tour with the boat, Journey Behind the Falls and the Skylon Tower, from $130 (4.8★ from more than 4,300 reviews), runs all year: from January to April the boat is replaced by the Niagara Takes Flight show.

2. See Horseshoe Falls from Table Rock

The viewpoint is free.

In winter you can expect:

  • Frozen mist
  • Ice formations
  • Snow-covered scenery
  • Dramatic views of the gorge

Dress for somewhere cold and wet.

Does Niagara Falls Freeze?

Niagara Falls does not normally freeze solid.

Ice can make parts of the scene look frozen, but huge amounts of water keep flowing underneath it.

The American Falls can look especially icy in a cold spell.

3. Queen Victoria Park

Winter crowds are generally much smaller than in summer.

Walk the park for views of:

  • The American Falls
  • Bridal Veil Falls
  • Horseshoe Falls

What to Wear

Bring:

  • An insulated coat
  • Layers
  • A hat
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof footwear
  • Warm socks

Good footwear matters, because mist, snow and the freeze-thaw cycle can make paths slippery.

4. Niagara Parks Power Station

This is an excellent winter attraction because much of it is indoors. It is open all year, although the outdoor platform can close in severe weather.

The Falls Tunnel Experience and Power Station entry is from $24 (4.8★ from 283 reviews), and takes you through the tunnel to a platform at the river’s edge. After dark, the Tunnel Experience at Night, from $27 (4.6★ from 155 reviews), adds the evening sound-and-light show.

Combine it with:

  • Table Rock
  • Journey Behind the Falls
  • Horseshoe Falls

Our guide to things to do in Niagara Falls, Canada covers the Power Station alongside the rest of the Canadian side.

5. Falls Illumination

Winter is especially atmospheric after dark.

Snow and ice can reflect the changing colours of the lights.

See Niagara once in daylight and once at night.

6. Winter Festival of Lights

While the festival is on, light displays around the city and along the Niagara Parkway give you a winter-only reason to visit. The 2026–27 festival runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, with the displays lit every night from 5pm to midnight.

Check the dates again before you travel.

7. Clifton Hill

Many of the indoor attractions stay open in winter.

Alternate outdoor Falls viewing with indoor stops to warm up. The Clifton Hill 6 Attraction Fun Pass is from $29 (4.6★ from 707 reviews).

8. Niagara SkyWheel

Enclosed gondolas give you views from above without a long spell outside. The Niagara SkyWheel ticket is from $12 (4.5★ from 1,146 reviews).

For a higher panorama, the Skylon Tower observation deck is from $17 (4.6★ from 2,563 reviews).

9. Niagara-on-the-Lake

The historic town is quieter in winter.

It works well for:

  • Restaurants
  • Cafés
  • Wineries
  • Slower sightseeing

10. Niagara Wineries

Winter wine tasting suits visitors interested in Niagara icewine.

A guided wine tour also cuts down the time you spend driving between stops in winter weather. The Niagara-on-the-Lake food and wine tour is from $65 (5.0★ from 15 reviews), a small review record so far, so check that it is running on your winter dates.

Niagara Gorge in Winter

Use the established viewpoints.

Do not assume summer hiking conditions in winter.

Snow and ice can make the gorge trails much harder going. Our Niagara Whirlpool and Whirlpool Rapids guide covers the viewpoints along the gorge.

December

Best for:

  • A holiday atmosphere
  • The Winter Festival of Lights
  • The Falls illumination
  • Journey Behind the Falls

Not the month for a boat-focused trip.

January

Best for:

  • Ice
  • Snow
  • Winter photography
  • Smaller crowds

It can also be extremely cold.

February

Still very wintry, and often good for a short couples’ trip.

Plan a mix of indoor and outdoor stops.

March

Unpredictable.

You may get winter conditions or milder days.

Do not assume the spring boat season has started. In 2026 Niagara City Cruises did not open until 1 May.

Summer vs Winter
